Ok so hear me out - in my personal opinion, a ‘trend’ is a word to describe the direction in which fashion / culture is navigating towards. Which also can feel temporary, or ‘at the moment’. It signifies a change or a shift that is currently happening, and as seasons are coming and going, it is inevitable that TRENDS will too. WHAT I DON’T LIKE ABOUT ‘TRENDS’ is that there is a feeling that you need to buy into the ‘trends’, tap into them, and continue on this vicious cycle indefinitely. Then feeling like “what a waste” about said ‘TRENDS’. Example, bell bottoms, purple (no offense), juicy couture track suits, etc.
As someone who has gone through immense trial and error with their own personal style, I loathe this. My approach to seasonal transitions now is to buy into ‘NON-TRENDS’ (we’re calling it that for now) which are styles that can be reworked into your wardrobe every year / season, and doesn’t need to be stored away when you’re done with them.
Everything I have listed below falls under this ‘NON-TREND’ category. If you resonate with it to buy into, you will feel that they have only added to your timeless wardrobe that you are en route to build, and will constantly be reaching for them time and time again.
Let’s get started with Part One!
RED
I am not a huge fan of buying into color but RED is one of the exceptions. It is elegant, bold, and classic. Now, I wouldn’t go crazy here but I feel that an oversized sweater, cardigan, mini bag, heel, really any accent to compliment an outfit would be ideal here.
Personally I am a fan of a red knit & opted for this CASHMERE SWEATER and PERFECT OVERSIZED SWEATER. I am planning to wear them with denim (dark wash & dark gray), leggings, and maybe even a black leather skirt. I would also love to wear them over my shoulders in the spring!
While we are on the topic of RED, insert BORDEAUX. The deeper, richer, moodier cousin has also entered the chat and we are VERY into her. Just as chic and timeless, she embodies fall. Bordeaux acts as an alternative, addition, all of the above, to the warm camel, tan, cognac tones and you can incorporate as such.
Here, I like the same styles; knits, an accessory, even a tight. However, I would treat this as something that does stay in fall/winter. You can absolutely bring it out year after year but don’t bank on bringing it out in July to mix into your ensemble. (I mean you can do anything, but you know what I mean)
Bordeaux is the sister to burgundy, merlot, maroon, wine, pinot noir; all those dark red tones work here.
If you do not already have a good trench coat, NOW is the time to pull the trigger. Whether you splurge, or not, it is honestly a staple that deserves a spot in your daily routine. You can throw on a trench coat after your work out, with a white tee / denim combo, a gray sweat suit underneath - options are endless!
Color, fabric, and fit are key when selecting the right one and these are the pieces I felt passed the vibe check!
As I have gotten older, I have a new found appreciation for sheer / chiffon / organza / taffeta. They read 90’s minimalist, slash Prada, slash modern elegance. They may not be intended for day to day wear, but incorporating these fabrics into evening / special occasion looks speaks volumes to me. THIS is where you can have a little more fun / but would recommend to not splurge (too crazy)!
I’ve linked very particular styles that I think are good intro pieces to work into your weekends / date nights / whatever!
Ok, the last ‘non-trend’ on part one is probably my favorite. I live for a good jacket as is, but add a coordinating bottom? YES PLEASE. With my particular lifestyle, I really go for the more practical styles that I can get good wear out of. That, and I find that sets make dressing that much easier. The emergence of dark denim sets especially gives the masculine chic energy I swoon over, and paired with a good combat boot (or dressed up with a pointy heel) - SOLD.
To me, this is where you can invest if possible. Either way, you are buying into two separate items, that can be worn often alone or together. I’ve linked a few styles that I have found, and I will keep an eye out for more as this is one category that I do see coming in hot once the season progresses.
I love this! Thanks so much for putting it together. I have to agree with you on trends. I'm still going through a lot of trial and error myself. I really want a Trench but I'm worried that with my short height ill look funny. Any particular one you wear? I'm 5'1 on a GOOD day lol
